Something I Would Never Forget

Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.

It was around 1pm. I wanted to go back home, so as usual I have to take the LRT from Sri Petaling to Terminal Bersepadu Selatan in Bandar Tasik Selatan and board on a bus from there. It was scorching hot outside although it rained cats and dogs this morning. Too lazy to walk, I decided to book a cab using the Grab app. A few minutes later, a taxi driver's photo and details showed up on my phone screen and another couple of minutes, I got a call from an Indian uncle, telling me that he had arrived.

I saw the taxi turned to the other side, so I immediately called him to tell that he went to the wrong way and when he arrived, I apologised for not informing him earlier. I was a bit afraid at first, but the feeling went right away after looking at his cheerful character and kind expression. He told me that it was okay.

The LRT station is just about 5 minutes away from Vista Komanwel (nampak lah malas nya tu hehe). The taxi metre showed RM5.25. I took out my purse from my bag and tried to find RM6. Unfortunately, I didn't have any small change, so I gave him RM10. He asked me if I have any smaller notes. I shook my head. I told him I only have RM4 at the moment. I asked him how much did he have because I thought if he had RM4 then I would just give him the RM10. He only had 2 pieces of RM1 note.

Suddenly, he told me to just give whatever I have. Then I said once again that I only had RM4. With his kind expression, he just said it's okay. I tried finding some coins in my wallet. Then he added, "Eh takpe dik. Cukup lah RM4 ni. Saya ikhlas." I was really touched. His act of kindness proves that even we are from different races and religions, but that doesn't mean we can't be kind to each other. In fact, this kind of act is one of the things that makes the world a better place to live.

Some people have this one kind of perception and and instantly label all taxi drivers with not-so-good characters just based on one or two experiences they had. To label the whole community just because some unfortunate events is unfair to those who do their job sincerely, especially people like this uncle.

The Indian uncle made my gloomy day turned bright. He inspired me to do good and be good through a simple gesture. I might forget his name. I might forget his look. But I would never forget the act of kindness he did.
